The European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter mission seeks to significantly change our understanding of the processes in the inner heliosphere and the influence of solar activity on processes within this little-studied region. The spacecraft will use a unique combination of in-situ measurements that, together with remote sensing, will help map the individual phenomena under investigation to their source regions and structures on the surface of the Sun. The Space Physics Division participated in the development of the Radio and Plasma Waves (RPW) subsystem of the instrument.

The air temperature of -42.2 °C is the lowest air temperature ever measured in the Czech Republic. It was recorded during the exceptionally cold February of 1929, when the temperature in Prague-Klementinum, for example, never once exceeded 0 °C. At that time, there were no meteorological stations in the frost hollows of Šumava Mts., where the temperature minima were undoubtedly even lower.

Svante August Arrhenius was a Swedish scientist. Originally a physicist, but often referred to as a chemist, Arrhenius was one of the founders of the science of physical chemistry. He received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1903, later he became the director of the Nobel Institute.
In developing a theory to explain the ice ages, Arrhenius, in 1896, was the first to use the principles of physical chemistry to calculate estimates of the extent to which increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) will increase Earth's surface temperature through the greenhouse effect. These calculations led him to conclude that human-caused CO2 emissions, from fossil-fuel burning and other combustion processes, are large enough to cause global warming. This conclusion has been extensively tested, winning a place at the core of modern climate science.
Svante Arrhenius died in Stockholm on October 2, 1927.
